It's a completely bogus ad - as noted by others here the cars pictured in the ad aren't even the same. One is Ralph Lauren's chassis 074 with the high mirrors - the photo taken in the garage at his Colorado ranch in 2005. The other image is of chassis 067 taken in Palo Alto around 2000 when that car was owned by Elon

Actually even XP1 didn't wear those mirrors - only the original non-functional styling model of the F1 did - internally it was known as the "Clinic Model". By the time an actual F1 prototype was built McLaren had already determined that mirrors mounted in that position would not meet the rules for SVA in the UK so

The coolest detail in my opinion is the embossed "F1 Owner's Manual" in the binding.

Did you actually see the car in person in Beverly Hills on Sunday?

I did, and for the record I'm not a huge fan of most recent Ferrari styling efforts, but I think the F60 America looks fantastic.

Here's an aftermath photo - credit to @davidandperry on Twitter.

Car is reported to have been owned by Michael Wekerle.

Yes, that was the first F1 Owner's Club Tour in May 2012. The freeze frame shows GTR 07R, now converted for road use. Owner offered me a quick spin in that car on the last day - simply amazing, especially since it placed 5th overall at the 24 Hrs of Le Mans in 1995, the year McLaren won.

As an engineer you have to be thinking about all possibilities, including a potentially careless owner [remember this is hypothetical still] or an accident and ensure you do all you can to mitigate the risks. Placing the fuel filler in such close proximity to some very hot components could be a recipe for this kind of

That's just one possibility out of 100 - lets wait for the incident report before we absolve Porsche of any culpability here.

LaFerrari took the honors a while ago:

Hot exhaust pipes are very close to the fuel filler on the 918. Could have been vapor igniting or someone who wasn't careful and swung the hose that still had a bit of fuel in the nozzle. Anyway, given the number of cars that get gas everyday and don't catch on fire, coupled with the relative newness of the 918,

Thanks - I'm the same guy George credited at the end of this article. Know these cars quite well. :-)

Yes and co-driver, Naoki Hattori.

That's not an F1 LM.

That is GTR #16R converted for road use and resprayed in McLaren's traditional orange paint.

I am a little upset that this thing was in Monterey this year for Car Week and I missed my chance to KIWF.

Lancia 037 behind the lift and a Lancia Stratos behind the front of the truck. Both amazing machines.

Yes, that now famous photo featured Okamoto's cars as well.

A rather old photo showing a portion of Okamoto's Ferrari collection including the F50 GT.

The original owner had a massive collection and didn't use any of his cars all that often. The two gentlemen who have owned this F1 since the original owner let it go in 2010 each had other F1s so there was no need to take it out and flog it - the car would have been purchased as an investment by each of them and

Pedals are adjustable as is steering wheel placement - both with a set of tools. The driver's seat was sized for the owner but can be changed. That sSeat also rides on a track like most cars and can be moved to suit other lucky drivers at a moment's notice.
