I read it’s because it promotes sweating. That layer of moisture helps cool. I guess it significantly reduces evaporation too.

Performance and Trophies are not the same thing. I can’t imagine a single child being confused about their performance after receiving a participation trophy. It is a beautiful thing to the child who tries but will never succeed without taking a single thing away from those who compete and win.
