This has been my practice for some time now. I have zero issues with running out of screen real estate. On a smaller screen or a laptop, I’d consider other options.

I have been using (and very pleased with) the “New York Subway” app from Mapway. They have very up-t0-date info on delays, as well as a link to the MTA Twitter feed. It’s available for free with “freemium” features available cheap. Give it a look.
