@fuchikoma: Snow grips pretty well on snow. It doesn't grip on solid ice. The worst snow condition is fresh snow on top of hard packed snow that has been polished to a shine (most roads, basically. Playgrounds get hard packed snow that has a slightly grippier surface, for example).
