Speaking as an Asian-American, the reason is because racism is about power. Because power in American society disproportionately favors whites, when a white actor takes a role erasing a character written as Japanese, it is fundamentally different than when the same swap is a black actor.

I think it’s a little more complicated by the fact that L’s actor is African American, which is a whole different dynamic in terms of racial equity. It’s not easy to suggest that that’s an example of hegemonic whiteness, for, y’know, obvious reasons. Whether or not that role should have gone to an Asian actor is for

“It wasn’t until Ghost in the Shell cracked it open [that] it became a conversation. But by then, we had already cast all of that stuff.” Anyone need a surplus of fertilizer? That’s a lot of bullshit to manage:

“It wasn’t until Ghost in the Shell cracked it open [that] it became a conversation. But by then, we had already cast all of that stuff.”

An opportunity to cast Asian American actors was missed, which is particularly disheartening when whitewashing still exists and few roles are created or given to them.

They could have, should have, just made a sequel. An extension of the Death Note universe in which Ryuk plays his game again, this time in America. New kid, new investigators, new twists, DO SOMETHING NEW.

How Japan deals with racial diversity is irrelevant to how America does so. They are two entirely different

Listen. Everybody has that one bad day (or a few.) Some of them happen to be typo-related. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

“Juries don’t like Nazis,” White said, noting widespread evidence that Unite the Right attendees deliberately instigated violence “suggests they are lying. And in general I am not inclined to take Nazis at their word.”

The goddamn audacity of Jefferson Beauregard Sessions. I imagine, after condemning white supremacy and bigotry on CBS This Morning this morning, he will direct the DOJ to request the same information about the rally in Charlottesville.

Going after anti-Trumpsters? He takes everything personally doesn’t he? I guess, I need to brew a pot of coffee, I am going to be busy keying in the names and addresses from that old 1984 phone book for Kansas City that my dad had in his garage.

Interested in investigating anti-Trump protest groups, possibly violating their civil rights?

That’s not really relevant to the situation at hand, since GoDaddy was actively making money from them.

“Why were you fired from your last job?”

My grandfather was shot down TWICE by the Japanese, and I know for a fact he’d have voted for Hirohito over Trump

My favorite thing about this is all the 90 year old men coming out and saying I spent my youth killing Nazis, and I’m ready to do it again if I have to.

My Grandfather spent his youth in North Africa and Europe killing nazis. I’m glad he didn’t live to see us elect one as president.

“We must come together as a country and try to understand each other peacefully. We can’t continue to scream nazi or sjw back & forth.”

I want them to set it up so Cable won’t tell Deadpool where he came from, so Deadpool, throughout the entire movie, makes wild guesses about his origin, each time getting more wild, and each time being completely comics accurate parts of Cable’s origin story.

Someone will say something to the effect of “So what’s your story?” Cut to title card stating THIS MOVIE IS ONLY 135 MINUTES LONG. THERE’S NO WAY TO CRAM CABLE’S BACKSTORY IN HERE. PLEASE REFER TO ALTERNATE SOURCES. DON’T FORGET, WIKIPEDIA IS A THING.

I wonder how they are going to explain his backstory. Perhaps it’ll just be “He’s a time traveling mutant” and then Deadpool will interject and be all “HIS BACKSTORY’S TOO COMPLICATED EVEN FOR THIS FRANCHISE NO WAY JOSE!”
