Speaking as an Asian-American, the reason is because racism is about power. Because power in American society disproportionately favors whites, when a white actor takes a role erasing a character written as Japanese, it is fundamentally different than when the same swap is a black actor.

I think it’s a little more complicated by the fact that L’s actor is African American, which is a whole different dynamic in terms of racial equity. It’s not easy to suggest that that’s an example of hegemonic whiteness, for, y’know, obvious reasons. Whether or not that role should have gone to an Asian actor is for…

I wonder how they are going to explain his backstory. Perhaps it’ll just be “He’s a time traveling mutant” and then Deadpool will interject and be all “HIS BACKSTORY’S TOO COMPLICATED EVEN FOR THIS FRANCHISE NO WAY JOSE!”
