Yeah, but watching it back in 1999 in the first few weeks, no one knew this. It wasn't part of the premise that you couldn't buy into because the premise was "What is the matrix?"

If you have the technology to build giant robots, surely you can design more effective weapons than just having those robots punch things. I'd also point out that at no point in the movie did they actually kill any of the monsters by punching them.
