I'm thinking of pulling the trigger on Saint's Row 3 for $5. Is it any good and do I have to have played the other two to follow the story?

To be completely honest, and at the risk of losing all game cred, I've only played Halo 3 ODST (because my 360 came with that and Forza). That game turned me off to the whole series. Is it an accurate representative of the other games?
