You’re ignoring that there’s a huge difference between “My son did this horrible thing and I wish he didn’t have to punished; please try to forgive him” & “Gee, what he did wasn’t so bad, really!” The mentality evinced by the father is akin to that if a rapist.

It’s not that he was “defending his son”. It was the concepts in which he believes in that make it possible for him to deny his son did anything seriously wrong that would make him need to be punished. It’s not too big of a stretch to think that only rapists refer to rape in these terms.
