Fair points. But if we're talking about used "beaters" rather than how they were new, the Fiero's reliability and power can (and is very often) upgraded by swapping in common FWD drivetrains like the supercharged 3.8L V6 or a Northstar V8. And Fieros have an awesome owner community presence online.

This is true, but I'd rather have an '88 Fiero GT than a well-sorted Prelude. My personal preference sways toward the crazier of the two I suppose.

It's a great car, but it's got nothing on the only mass-produced mid-engine American car. Two-seats, RWD, available with a manual, V6 (lack of) power, lightweight, small, surprisingly safe, pop-up headlights... what's not to like?

How is the Fiero not dominating the Prelude? Is this not Jalopnik, where obscurities such as America's first and only mass production mid-engine, RWD car, available with a V6 and manual, and with a curb weight under 3,000 lbs should be worshipped? The Prelude is a FWD Honda. Come on people, the answer is obvious.

That is, if you believe that range will never increase. If we could get 400 miles on a charge, you'd deal with it as often as a gas pump. And that's not really an unattainable goal.

See the other comments. Safety has definitely improved since the old days, but they weren't the total death traps you might be lead to believe. Also the '59 Malibu wasn't a shining example of safety in its own day let alone in the present.
