As someone who’s not really a basketball fan, I don’t get the ‘posterized’ thing. From my understanding, there are rules in basketball that set these situations up several times a game for both teams, so I don’t get it.

Nah, as Jiffylush said, they were probably below him. If they were in the water, they couldn’t cause each other any damage, other than maybe pushing each other into the blue line. They probably were damaged by the line slightly before him, which lead to him outlasting them.
