This comment is incomplete. It misses the whole point of graffiti art as a genre - that it is public, that is free, that is available to literally anyone at any time. It’s not sitting inside a collector’s private home or inside a museum with a entrance fee. These are legitimate places for art to be, but graffiti art

Most pretentious response yet. It is surface level to you. Lots of people feel like he brings some great conversations to the front. As art should do. You feel like it’s all lame surface bullshit. But I don’t see too many people doing much of this at all these days. So good for him. Maybe look at the bigger picture

“I work at Staples Center and lemme tell you, this guy is gonna be a headache. I’m gonna dread working Laker games this coming season”.

I would wager that most people hating on Banksy have not actually been to Bristol and seen the overall context of his work or the work of his contemporaries. Bristol is absolutely covered in the most amazing art I’ve ever seen and all of it’s commentary is beautifully stitched together. If there is a criticism, it is

Yeah, I think people (usually non-artists) often take for granted the level of skill and conceptualization that it takes to create art that has any kind of impact. His stuff doesn’t always work, but when it does I think Banksy’s ability to marry the perfect image in the right context to make a very clear statement to

Specifically this stunt in New York is what changed my mind about Banksy. I don’t particularly even like this early style of his but to sell his prints for a few dollars to people who either don’t know anything about him or care the work might be knock offs just because people might like them, I love that.

You’re thinking about it way too much, do you like to talk about wine as well? Wanker

Hold on, now. Are you telling me there were movies made before 1980? What the hell am I reading all those online lists for, then?

Amen. People who have only been paying attention to Banksy for the past few years and then say they’re a johnny-come-lately are like folks who finally watch Casablanca or Citizen Kane and then deride those films for being full of cliches.

Well I think it’s kind of a cheap shot to bemoan that the fact that the art only engages in surface-level social commentary not necessarily because it’s not true, but because I’m not sure how much more you can really expect graffiti art to do. Ultimately, we’re talking about images as statements on very complex

Your critique of what you think constitutes Banksy’s work is so much shallower than your misrepresented version of his work that I do have to give you some credit. Your comment is the 2014 version of, “My kid could paint that.” If you’re trying to satirize or parody people who explain things they obviously can’t

Robert Del Naja is an artist himself and he does use his voice for good. So if indeed Banksy is Del Naja, well...

Are you that dumb? The ‘ghetto’ piece was mocking the gentrification of the bronx (which is largely sold to middle class white youth as being ‘ghetto’) as well as graffiti. It was also calling out current graffiti artists that think they’re doing something ‘ghetto’. With that said, Banksy has never really tried to

The streak of dumb shit from accounts with “burner” in the name continues.

I don’t see how it doesn’t make sense. A website that derives revenue from advertising, which provides value by the number of visitors, producing content designed to maximize the number of visitors? Not sure where this isn’t coming together for you

Shawn Kemp, probably.

Idiots like you clicking on the post make it so idiots like them have to write articles on idiots like him

That’s cool.

I work at Staples Center and lemme tell you, this guy is gonna be a headache. I’m gonna dread working Laker games this coming season.
