I'd be kind of happy if the Sherlock Christmas special is just a straight adaptation of one of the original works, same cast in the same roles but set in the era with no connection to the series other than the actors involved.
If you wanted to you could say that they are simply "unlocking" their mutant genes which would otherwise remain dormant in this universe.

The main characters were great in Tremors but there is a reason (besides money) the Tremors series became the Burt Gummer show.
Laserdiscs were more inconvenient than DVDs. At least you don't need to flip most DVDs over to watch the movie all the way through.
