Well, he already whitewashed Khan in Star Trek, why not add a little pinkwashing to his resumé, too? Coming soon: Benedict Cumberbatch as Alice Walker!
This is actually a brave and surprising announcement from Boitano. As someone who's followed the sport for decades, I can tell you that figure skating and its fandom are deeply conservative and not gay-friendly at all. Boitano's coming out doesn't just make a statement internationally, it will also help make his sport…
It's more than just internet petitioners who want Beyoncé to skip the Kimyé wedding:
Despite all the gay jokes, competitive figure skating is actually a really conservative environment. In the entire history of the sport, only one competitive figure skater came out during his competitive career (that would be Rudy Galindo, from almost 20 years ago). That puts it way under other sports like men's rugby…
Stooshe is my favorite new girl group from the UK (or anywhere). Three women with massive voices singing a modern take on Motown. They have a delightfully vulgar sense of humor (their debut single is called Fuck Me). They don't seem to be aiming for the US yet, but I highly recommend them anyway.
I don't think economic well being is a particularly relevant factor in most cases, except for one: France. If you read the summary of the Pew report, it's the country that experienced the largest drop in gay acceptance, dropping 6%, within the last 6 years. This is almost certainly the result of the violent backlash…
Context matters. A lot of the girls this concert is supposed to help would not be able to dress like this out of their own choice. To be able to safely display sexuality and vulnerability and take charge of it is something only possible for women in certain societies, at certain levels of power, and only in certain…
Most applications of the Bechdel test will take pains to say that it's not the sole qualification of whether a movie is sexist or not. Passing it doesn't mean it's not, not passing doesn't mean it isn't. But it is a useful way for those of us interested in storytelling to think about how characters and roles are…
This article is a nice response not just to the overtly hateful bigots bigoting in their usual way over this ad, but also to the people (and by people I mean redditors, which perhaps disqualifies them as such) who dismiss this ad as "eh whatever". It's not just the haters who need to recognize (and then fuck off), but…
Watching those movies and contemplating their plots and continuity would be more confusing.
This has been bothering me for a while about Jezebel: the fawning posts from the staffers of the blog making a celebrity out of my governor (there's this one, there's one a few weeks back with Christie and Jon Bon Jovi). Then there are post after post from commenters, even ones who don't seem to be fond of him, who…
Minnesota senator Scott Dibble, the openly gay author of the marriage equality bill, gives a subdued but emotional speech about marriage equality, and he starts it with a Langston Hughes recitation:
So after heartlessly vetoing the bill last year, Christie finally gets pressured by lobbying, begging, towns passing resolutions and Bon Jovi's very personal story into signing the law. Better late than never. Now if only he'd do something about all the Planned Parenthood funding he cut...
Please don't give Christie any credit. He vetoed the bill last year. It took a huge amount of begging and lobbying, and the pressure of an election to get him to reconsider. All the credit should instead go to the New Jersey Legislature that passed the law. Twice.
Here's the full speech! Very, very emotional and powerful as a result.
In the older days of the internet, there was a lady who went around LiveJournal yelling at people for writing erotic fanfic of the X-Men character Cyclops, because she's married to him, you see. Truly, history is cyclical.
Natalie Maines has a solo album coming out this May. It has some really interesting song choices on it. I'm not so sure it'll be country, though. I am beyond psyched for it, because, in my estimation, Maines has one of the greatest voices ever in popular music.
