Community’s “Intro to Political Science” episode got into this in a pretty comical way. Jeff Winger was the “say what they want to hear” guy while Annie was the “say what you believe is right” person. One became a lot more popular for most of the episode.

I hear you - Serena was getting waxed, and after a bad call she came unglued. It happens all the time in sports. Why are we calling Serena a victim here? When an NBA guy gets a tech after getting dunked on, everyone agrees he’s “completely lost control”.

Probably because you don’t understand the rules of tennis. I’ve seen that ref do much the same thing to male players and you’d have seen it too if you actually watched tennis and didn’t just fire off the handle about things you know little about.

Yeah, that’s a pretty disingenuous reading of that. I think the ref failed miserably, and I also think Serena reacted poorly and contributed to the bad scene. Nowhere did I place all the blame on Ramos, but thanks for operating in good faith.

Osaka won 12 games to Serena’s 6. Nothing was taken away yesterday except for Osaka’s spotlight, which is the real tragedy here.

A third option is that Williams was intentionally ratcheting up the situation in a fruitless attempt to heighten her own level of play and intensity, and to intimidate her young opponent, because those things have worked in the past. They didn’t work yesterday.

My sense from reading various tennis-knowers this morning is the coaching violation really was a pretty ridiculous call, given the circumstances and what was being penalized. But also Serena definitely came unglued, possibly because she was getting pushed around by Osaka.
