The fact that we “don’t need them” here is irrelevant to the moral choice of generously offering them refuge. We don’t “need” a lot of the people who live in this country. Because we are ourselves a nation of refugees we have, traditionally, made the decision to share our bounty.

The reason illegals by and large do that kind of work is because it is so low-paying. But rather than paying Mericans more, growers will simply look at automation instead. Have big harvesting machines take care of it all.

Ultra-nationalism requires that one holds their own country above all else, thus unable to compromise with neighbors, adversaries, etc., since that would be an admission of partial faulty in one’s own nation.
