My experience of twitter hasn't included any of this, but that's because I never go check to see what's trending. I am now reaffirming my commitment to never check what's trending as it is clearly even worse than I assumed it would be. The only time I see these offensive hashtags is when someone appropriates them and

Wow! That must have been so exciting. I love Judy Blume as a writer and as a person.

True. I guess I don't know much about that, so it's not the first thing that sprung to my mind. That's another way in which the story is being told only from a certain angle. Thank you again for posting the link about Catherine Davis.

I join others in thanking you for posting this. The lack of coverage of his victim has disturbed me. I think the issue of scientology essentially denying treatment to a mentally ill person deserves attention, the lopsided nature of the coverage of this story has really bothered me.

Have you seen this?

Yes! It would never occur to me to do that. Well, after seeing that picture of Obama, I might hand him my baby for a second.

OK, I'm not a fan, but that is a seriously cute picture.

Is it OK if I don't have a problem with Kelly saying OK to the gift, but I do have a problem with the existence of $250,000 nail polish? I would agree that there are so many more signs, worse signs even, that we've gone wrong as a culture, but I am putting diamond nail polish on the list.

Haha, you're right about the out-of-proportion sense of sainthood for sure.

:-) You are right to want to think it through.

I hear you. But in the accountant example, it would have an effect on his job in that clients would leave the firm. You lose the firm clients, you get fired. Standard practice. If the community objected to a safe sex book, there would seriously be no grounds. The woman might be fired anyway because teachers and other

You do have a point. But if you were describing why you didn't like/hated Bush or Romney, would your go-to points be "Doesn't look like a president" ? You might put "I can't stand to look at him" in there somewhere, but would that be pretty much your whole thesis?

So, I was friends with this guy in college, and just found out he was famous, literally just now. Like, I knew his work as a writer, and that he was doing well, but not that he was in front of the camera, known by many. I am having a weird moment.

I mostly agree, but I would add: when I couldn't drink during pregnancy, my husband offered to abstain as well, and I not only didn't need him to, I demanded that he not. I knew I'd be hormonal, cranky, whatever and thought life would be easier for me if my man unwound from work with a beer or two if he felt like it.

truth.

I agree with the other commenters, but I would add that this guy is employed as a counselor, and published a book proving that he is bad at giving counsel. If a non-tenured college professor published a book in his or her field that publicly displayed their lack of competence in that field, they would be fired. If you

Yes. I think publishing a book that proves you are bad at your job is a legitimate reason to be fired. I'm pretty certain at the college level, any non-tenured professor who demonstrates publicly total incompetence in his or her field would not have their contract renewed. I don't think this is a case of someone being

Yes. There are certain jobs where a person's good character is an actual job requirement, I think. Seems legit to fire this guy.

I made a similar comment a moment ago. I will believe that this woman doesn't KNOW she's got a bunch of racist attitudes buzzing around in her brain. Doesn't make it not racist.

She would, but I bet you ten bucks her reason wouldn't be "doesn't look like a First Lady."
