Believe me... I was an Adobe pirate for years.
who competes with them? It certainly isn't GIMP - they can't get their act together.
Like I said... you can stop using Adobe software at any time... regardless of whether you have a subscription or a boxed copy.
I can't think of anyone who would willingly sign up to pay $360 or more per year to use photoshop as a hobbyist.
