Have you considered the perspective of the picture? If there are eyes, it must be looking from somewhere. So that's something that needs to be decided, is the ice opening downward or upward? The eyes, are they looking from inside or outside?

Hey, lets all remember that Halo was originally a 3rd person shooter and RTS. They must have had some way to make that 3rd person experience awesome-remember, this was back in Bungie's Marathon days.
