well, the U.S. never went to war with Ukraine so I am not bothered by this one.
if you are all that interested you can read about political prisoners in Russia — say, a guy who was recently given 5 years of prison for a blog post. and Russian police do not use batons to rape people — they use bottles.
as to paranoia — the very setting is about it. they are restoring the Cold War mindset and worldview, and paranoia is its huge part.
