If I remember correctly, FAFSA calculated that my parents were “expected” to contribute >20K/year toward my college expenses when they were making a combined maybe generous estimate of ~60K income, back in the early 2000s. A THIRD of the family income.

I actually brought up the D-word over hubby’s lack of affection and then had to explain to him the difference between sex and affection.

Yup I got the impression the author just wanted to do an analysis of beauty, which is fine, but different from the broader analysis the headline promised.

There’s a take amongst fairy tale scholars that tales that fall in the same category as “Beauty and the Beast” aren’t really supposed to be about women/Belle (at least in the original purposes/tellings of the tale) so much as it’s supposed to be about the Beast’s transformation and the concept of acceptable

I had a really hard time discerning the ~point~ of this article. The title suggest that Improper Princesses are a problem, the conclusion just talks about how Beauty is different from the rest of them (which I don’t entirely agree with, having read a lot of IP books in my day). Is it just a literary critique and

men are not the living, breathing boners that they’re stereotyped to be, and women are not the frigid kill joy crones they’re made out to be either

The mention of ambivalence is interesting to me in that I am 49 years old, no real signs of peri-menopause but about two years ago, I stopped being interested in having sex with people and was keen on living life w/ only masturbation.

Then in 1980, there was Tamora Pierce’s Alanna: The First Adventure about a girl who disguises herself as a boy and takes her brother’s place in knight school.

Well, one, we’re not necessarily talking about U of Illinois. But if we were, that number is tuition only. You’re going to need to make rent, food, and pay for books and maybe transportation and additional medical insurance as well.

That approach - tailoring your message to what currently polls well - is a doomed strategy. It means you are not pushing the overton window, while your opponents are, which means you will inevitably lose ground. The reason conservatives have dominated the past generation is that their messaging is always

Good to see galaxy brain mindset that has infected establishment Democrats since Reagan is spreading to establishment liberal groups.

Off-hand, I suspect the polling indicated what people probably already understand intuitively (e.g., that “reproductive rights” polls better than “abortion.”), and the organization is trying to frame an effective messaging campaign that hones as closely to “what works” based on polling as possible.

How many jobs pay 1x what they did in ‘90, adjusted for inflation?

This shocks and horrifies many of us. If I lived in the US, odds are I wouldn’t have gotten the level of tertiary education I have. Not through lack of ability, because I know which US schools I had the marks for, but simply because I would have been priced out. My family is in the middle ground of earning too much

Yes. I went to a private business school in Europe. It ranks pretty high in all charts. Undergraduate was 3 years: 20k total. Graduate was 2 years: 15k. This was without scholarships. Tuition, books and some other stuff. And it’s the most expensive in the country. My friend went to med school and was paying 2k a year,

My public school system is charging nearly 10x as much as it did when I graduated in ‘90. How many jobs pay 10x what they did in ‘90?

Recently, while listening to the UK podcast ‘My Dad Wrote A Porno’, I heard one of the hosts blurt out “Do you realize just how much American have to pay for college?” The implication was that America was far outside the norm in that regard. The podcast literally reads a porn novel written by the host’s dad and THIS wa

As the bills thru grad school approach 250k-750k for a private school, can you really blame them? I mean, Not everyone has that money and one kid, either.

Expecting your parents to pay for college is a boomer throwback. Their income shouldn’t factor into your financial aid, at least with the current formula. They

Hey, let’s greatly reduce the cost of tuition.
