Technically, “SAW squad gun”* seems to refer to the class of weapon that would be called a “Squad Automatic Weapon”. While the current standard US SAW is indeed the 5.56mm M249, for years it was the 7.62mm M60 (which is perfect for taking out Nazi methheads!)
