Wait, is that a thing? I am queer but not really in the "community". I wear tennis shoes and have tattoos. Just because that's what I like. Neither have anything to do with my sexual identity (bad feet and a love of ink are my reasons), but are other people assuming that they do?

God forbid you dress up as a child. Spirit crushing, to be sure. /s/

I think I definitely asked the right person! Thank you so much for your response. This is an area I have a lot to learn about, so I really appreciate your detail. I have a lot of reading to do on the issues/realities you raised.

Commenting just for critical mass hopes. WTF and FU Jezebel. If you want to put triggering shit in the normally inane tweetbeat, give some heads up. Good day! And by good day, I mean go sit in the corner and reevaluate your editorial choices for this normally lighthearted internet gossip feature I used to like and now

Ugh, history is full of gross and awful.

I'm with you re:ball sports. At least human balls are soft and warm :)

Ugh. I went to a highschool where if you did well in sports many would stay for a " victory lap". That meant that when I was in my senior year I got to be tormented and called a dyke constantly by a bunch of older asshats who stayed in highschool for another year instead of graduating because they wanted to play

I think it's because elite athleticism is so relatively rare, it is disturbing that sexual assault is so high for that group. You are correct that there are many more rapes/sexual assaults/rape culture promotion happening in other parts of society. Ratio-wise, though, male jock culture is really heavy with rape and

Aw, Scarlett was a jerk. You are gorgeous.

I have the same issue. I've found that clear mascara or Vaseline combed onto curled lashes are often enough for me. Not sure of the safety of Vaseline there, but that, real Kohl from a relative's journey's, and the original benetint were my thing in highschool.

I tried fake eyelashes and quickly realized that my spectacles would not jive with that. Sometimes curling and painting my eyelashes is just physically incompatible with my vision.

Totally depends on what kind of eyelashes you have and what you want. I can't leave the house without three lip balms/salves and hand cream. Lots of people think that's crazy. My eyelashes do fine without mascara though, even when I line (which I love to do thick and hard - learning to temper). Whatever.

My perception is that Katy Perry does not pull off the satirical part very well, so to me, it comes across as consistently trying to sell sex with an innocent caveat. She does not articulate this well in interviews that I have seen, if that is her intention. She is also much older (in industry years) and has been in

Yeah, my understanding is that a lot of people who faught to end slavery still thought a la Seinfeld's save a man's life and he'll be your butler forever! It's like when some asshole wants a bunch of praise for not being an asshole for once. Except way worse because they were complicit in a system that destroyed lives

Oh I believe you and I'm sure it does happen at other schools too, but it is definitely not standard Canadian public school protocol to regularly do drug checks like that.

Haha, what? I went to public school in Canada. There were maybe two drug checks a year (where we'd have to stay in class while drug dogs went through the halls). And I remember two guys got caught smoking in their car in the parking lot. Everyone else smoked joints and pipes in the designated tobacco smoking area and

I agree - we need some different versions of sexy to make more appearancese. I'm mostly just annoyed that she's throwing shade on pop tarts while patting herself on the back for doing the same thing, but with candy, braces, and Elmo (which is actually way creepier to me). I don't like how she acts like a sexy wide

Yeah, it's still sexy. Burlesque is humorous and tongue in cheek and it is very sexy. Vargas pin-ups have a sense of humour and they are very intentionally sexy. Katie Perry (or her people) are obviously inspired by some of those things and she definitely has intentionally cultured a sexy image for herself.

Yeah, I probably should have used a different word. Shaming is too strong a word for what she's doing. Her comments do really bug me though. It does seem like she is being pretty critical and dismissive of other women who don't dress a certain way. She clearly states that she thinks she's more inspirational because

Ha! So as long as the nudity is for money and self promotion, it's OK. But pop stars who just like to wear more revealing outfits as a course of personal style should be shamed? That's kinda odd thinking to me.
