I want to mock these people but I can't because I am a big fan of subscription boxes and that's almost the same thing—getting surprised by stuff I could easily buy but find much more interesting when someone else sends it to me.

My mother has a doll from 1948 that she got from sending in coupons from her breakfast for months. The doll was sent flat-packed; she had to stuff it herself to be two-dimensional and sew up its feet to keep the stuffing from falling out.
