To expand your tip even further, a lot of stuff in this game can be stopped by a well timed gun parry (you do need to be at least one dash length away from the enemy for it to work), even enemies that you might not think it would work on.

This is excellent advice. I’d also like to point out that he can be easy to stun with a gun parry when he winds up for a swing. Your mileage may vary as not all the guns are drawn and fired at the same speed. I either used the starter pistol or Evelyn on him.
