Stealing is one of the first crimes we’re taught up as a kid. You OWN things, and someone takes things, that’s stealing. Compare that to piracy which makes you think of 4 movies of annoying Johnny Depp being quirky. And changing the word is is a quick way to get a response.

Few people have done studies on it, but last I heard someone try, it was stated that about only 10% of the pirated number could be considered actual lost sales. But I’d imagine it’d vary on a case by case basis.

Replace piracy with “stabbing a man and hijacking his boat” and it sounds really bad. Replacing a word to make it sound scarier isn’t really a good argument strategy.

Actually games do. A lot of DS games will let you piddle around the early area: Pokemon BW let you play without gaining xp or saving, Spirit Tracks let you play up till the train, GTA Chinatown threw you in a car and drove you off a bridge. I think Serious Sam even had a fun one with a giant monster trying to kill you.

As long as Dead or Alive 5 cosmetic DLC exists, no other game can compete in the “nickle and dime” department.
