Thing is, there is nothing particularly spectacular about his game. He’s a grinder, a backboard who moves exceptionally well; returns serve probably better than anyone else; and is unbelievably mentally tough.
ok
I didn’t describe the loss to Graf at Wimbledon as ‘crush[ing].’ I said she was ‘crushed’. She lost 6-2 6-1. That’s a beating, a clear message and an absolutely dominant performance. Is that what you’re finding ‘interesting’?
I don’t know that it’s fair to say ‘it’s widely acknowledged...’ about the level of Graf’s competition. Yes, she was a good deal better than everyone else (including Seles, who she crushed at Wimbledon after having had a couple of tough losses to her-then Seles was stabbed, which admittedly ruined the rest of her…
I thought Carillo’s take on Bartoli (the reporter) was interesting as well. The reason she mentioned this situation is the way Bartoli got the info- she is playing in the ‘Legends’ event at Roland Garros and happened to be in the locker room when Williams was receiving treatment.
I agree, some of the results of the study are at best, um, a little curious.
Right, but what Senna did at Suzuka was not something I could ever justify. And I say that as a huge fan. He risked his and Prost’s lives out of spite, I’ll never believe what he said about going for the gap.
There are basically two genuinely interesting gender/wage situations in all of sport. Grand Slam tennis (men play 50-67% more than women, but the prizes are the same) and the US men’s and women’s national teams in soccer.
Completely fair point re: influence within a team and within the governing body. Also true about quality of the car Senna was usually in, though the above ‘scientific’ study is meant to account for those kinds of variables.
It’s true that Prost was close with Balestre, but it’s just as true that Senna was an able political player as well with friends up and down the chain at McLaren. Not sure it’s fair to imply that Prost only able to beat Senna as a result of that relationship (if indeed you are doing that - you may not be). Prost is a…

ha ‘study carrels.’ haven’t heard that in a real long time
as a slight aside, and speaking of Marinovich, the ESPN doc about him was really, really great.
‘No Surprises’ is a perfect rock song. It is as perfect as ‘Born to Run’ or ‘Kick Out the Jams’, anything.
I’m the person that thinks Ok Computer is the best album of the last 35 years. When you consider who they were before and after this, and what rock music was before and after this, I just can’t put any of their other [great] records in the same place.
I saw Radiohead in Dublin 2003 and it was the best show I’ve ever seen. They were touring Hail to the Thief (my pick for their most underrated album), but played from across their entire catalog.
Do they offer that class at TrollSoHardUniversity? I need to go to the Registrar’s office
