Uh, it's the film makers take on "realism". Turtles do have nostrils, so taking them away would heat up other "realism fans". We've already got cartoon-ish teenage turtles. Trying a different approach is not half as bad is all I'm saying.

Like it or not, if they're mutated to shape like humans, it's only natural to include nostrils and lips. Having human-like features but excluding the nostril and lip is unrealistic.

Looks bad or not, it's their way of projecting realism so I'm fine with that.
