Tonic is for gin. Seltzer is for slapstick clown acts.

They’re okay by me. They have no sugar, and in a pinch make a decent base to a gin-based cocktail when you accidentally run out of tonic.

Today is my mother’s 90th birthday. She’s directly in the path and (as directed by emergency management) is sheltering in place. With no power or cell service, we hadn’t been able to reach her, but did hear indirectly that she’s sitting in her Florida room with a pot of strong coffee and a crossword puzzle. Maybe

For most people along the gulf coast, photos of alligators are going to cause at most mild amusement, not panic.

Yes, it’s been pretty well documented that it did exactly this. Plus it allowed some older workers to retire earlier and freed up those slots for younger workers. The only thing I know of that was predicted that hasn’t been measurable yet is a reduction in ER visits.

I’m confused. Why hasn’t the bottom bun been covered in cheese, the top bun slathered in butter, and both broiled in the oven until delicious? What is this, a land of heathens?

Yes, I feel bad because when I read the headline, I just assumed this was a sex-ed thing. That kind of cultural difference is pretty damning.

That’s a lot of money. For Gates, Bezos, et al, you can kind of see what they are doing with their cash. I wonder what someone like Putin does for fun/new-development/etc. with that kind of loot.

We truely live in the digital age.

My kids eat a lot of fruit whenever they want. A lot. Whenever they want. Our secret to accomplishing this feat? Have a lot of fruit available. Allow them to eat it whenever they want.

“I was an only child, eventually.”

The US is consistently ranked as pretty poor compared to other first world countries regardless of the mix of metrics one uses. I assume your wait times are for the ER. The US doesn’t measure that well across hospitals, but does appear to be better than Canada. One problem of course is that we simply don’t gather

I agree on the tax comparison, which is why I caveated it. I’m still not getting your point that other countries that pay substantially less for better health care are somehow at a disadvantage compared to the US. That doesn’t make any sense to me.

Given that US R&D in health care is shrinking while others are

I’m not following the logic here. We pay twice as much in the US overall for healthcare so that is a drag on countries that pay less? It seems like it’d be the other way around. Also, per capita GDP in a highly un-mobile and stratified society like ours? A better metric would be median income wouldn’t it? We’re

But how are they different?

Congratulations. Finishing a marathon is indeed an achievement to be proud of.

I’ll add that you can avoid several of these problems right off the bat by running in a smaller marathon as your first one. There are many that are only a few hundred runners.

Most people can drive reasonably well, more or less. As the article points out, people are terrible at this type of speech pattern recognition. So it would appear that one is more difficult than the other, for humans at least.

It’s unlikely that the entire Antarctic icesheet would melt though. Some of it will (and is), but if all of it melts, we’ll be having bigger issues than 200 extra feet of water.
