Really? I was catching public transportation around the same age but for a much shorter ride (maybe 20 minutes tops) in Philadelphia. She also would lose her mind if I wasn't home with 45 minutes of school letting out.

In japan many parents let their kids catch the trains or walk to school alone. Granted, they are usually with a buddy, but I've seen 1st and 2nd graders out and about by themselves in downtown Tokyo. Japan is much safer than the states, but bad things could still happen.
