Any shield works — I use the worst ones I have in the event I miss. Get as close as possible and hit the parry button the second his eye turns blue and you hear the sound of the laser firing (the audio cue, as others have said, is a better indicator of when to press A). Works every time.

If you buy an anchient shield you don’t even need to press A, you just stand still and it will auto reflect

Yep, guardian shields, which you get from the smaller guardians in shrines. The test of strength shrines usually have them.
