The trailer makes this seem like a successor to Mean Girls that's just different enough to be worthy. But the fact that the studio is dumping it in September means they don't have a lot of confidence in it. I'll have to hear more about this movie.

This picture of her from her performance in Cannes is fantabulous. A magical capture of a magical creature.

@Daisycat: Tell him the statistics, that only 13% of rapes that are reported to the police in the US ultimately end with a conviction. And by any reasonable estimate, the majority of rape doesn't even get reported to the police. Any way you look at it, the deck is stacked against the rape victim. You may also want to

The proposal to keep accused rapists anonymous in the UK deserves more examination by Jezebel and society at large (with Jez leading the way). Particularly with regard to this post: [jezebel.com]

Legendary diva remakes pop song of the moment — how it should be done.

@WashingMyHair: I don't fault you for not making the distinction, because it is a nebulous one. Any non-citizen who lives in this country is on precarious legal ground, regardless of the legality of their stay. The visas they have can be yanked or invalidated for any number of reasons beyond their control at any

@WashingMyHair: The numbers he cites are well sourced. The dramatic increase in deportations started during the Bush administration, when the US border security infrastructure and policies were dramatically altered. So a slightly more charitable way of putting it would be that Obama hasn't stemmed the dramatic rise

But more importantly, what's going to happen to French national treasure/hipster favorite Daft Punk? Without their masks, they're just purveyors of silly europop.

@janiejones56: She was a better fighter/element of surprise/got lucky or some combination of all three.

@Cairn: Rosa Parks did her thing, but so did Angela Davis.

This is not an unprovoked attack on a defenseless victim. The mutaween are armed and do use force. They have killed before. The woman and her companion were in physical danger (and his unexplained passing out is awfully suspicious). We don't know the whole story, true, but framing this as "woman beats up cop" is wrong.

In the US, whenever a police report says a suspect passed out for no apparent reason while in custody, chances are, excessive force was used and the cops are just covering it up. I imagine this also applies to Saudi Arabia. The woman's companion didn't just pass out for no reason, the policeman likely attacked him.

This needs to be cross-posted (pun unintended but not unnoticed) at io9.com.

One of, or maybe just plain the most visually influential directors ever is Leni Riefenstahl, who invented a host of cinematic technique that are ubiquitous. Her style is the definition of cinematic spectacle. Everybody from Orson Welles to George Lucas took after her. Normally, one single example may not be enough to

Actually, there may be something to this. One study found that convicted rapists were exposed to porn at a later age and consumed less of it compared to those convicted of nonsexual offenses. Another study found that rapists and child molesters consumed less porn than the general population. Correlation doesn't point

Why stop at blocking one ad? Adblock renders all this moot.

Sexual repression makes me moist.

@GeneKuya: All of k.d. lang's earlier albums, of course (her latter ones are astounding, too, but less rooted in country).

@MercurialGirl: It's a shame lang isn't better known, she is a standout even in a genre full of astounding voices. I can't blame Wright, an individual with her own life and focus, for not knowing who lang is, although it does make me wonder a bit at her awareness of pop culture and gay progress. I do, however, blame

@LouisiAnna: Melissa Etheridge is a pioneer, too, but she wasn't really country. Etheridge is really more of a heartland rocker (a genre that does share some of its DNA with country), think Bruce Springsteen as opposed to Garth Brooks. Etheridge, however, did come out in the heyday of her career in a musical genre
