Worf would kill you where you stand for dissing the warriors drink
Props to io9 for observing this 50th anniversary of ST properly and thumbs down to Paramount/CBS for half assing it. The franchise deserves so much better.
Q was more like a Trickster God from childhood fables, not so much a villain
Even better, that moral Grey rubbed off on our righteous Federation characters as well
Good god that's brilliant
Yep I always felt that the 'perfect' and 'evolved' humanity of TOS and TNG was just a reflection of Roddenberry's hubris, arrogance and a product of big talk. Shows like DS9 peeled away at that 'perfect' veneer and called out a lot of that as BS.
It also forced them to develop and evolve their characters in way that TOS or TNG never did.
Problem is, aside from Brent Spiner, almost the rest of the TNG cast was a distant 2md tier in acting ability below him.
You damn Herbert...
Quark was also one of the few characters who knew himself amd was unapologetic about his fundamental nature.
I find Planet Africa almost endearingly horrible.
That's mostly the fault of Roddenberry's overbearing influence
TNG continued the message and themes of TOS in the best way (Voyager did a much poorer job of this) but DS9 expanded the Star Trek fictional world into new directions and bold new narrative styles
Yep TNG was all about moving forward and hardly ever having to deal woth consequences or cleaning up messes. DS9 was ALL about consequences and dealing with those messes.
I like to think Roddenberry era Trek portrayed a ‘sanitized’ and heavily filtered take on the Federation similar to how American news gives a very biased and filtered take on world events or military conflicts overseas.
No disrespect to Roddenberry but I enjoyed Star Trek the most when his direct involvement was over and the franchise storytelling was allowed to grow & evolve beyond his limited narrative rules
Press access, Netflix did the same thing for Daredevil & Jessica Jones, we were given sneak preview reviews of the first 7 eps of both those series as well
I think this probably happens in England as well where many small town folk try to extinguish their easily place able regional accents when moving to the big city and adopt more of a BBC standard London accent
Yeah and Roddenberry’s narrow, restrictive guidelines for writing Roddenberry approved ST stories...really put a stranglehold on developing complex, interesting and ironically...human characters that we could identify with. He thought we wanted to follow and worship idealized versions of his vision of humanity.
