What's funny is that ST did almost the exact same story in the Animated series ep The Magicks of Megas Tu where the Enterprise travels to the unapproachable center of the galaxy, discover a mysterious planet occupied by an alien being with God-like powers who turns out to be Satan, but he turns out to be a super cool…

Part of that was because of the budget of TOS but also because of the limitations imposed by Roddenberry’s storytelling.

It was true to the spirit of TOS and more or less copied the plots of a few TOS eps but that does not make it a good film by 1990 stamdards

You know that the only reason he was allowed to direct was because Nimoy directed movies 3 & 4 and the two actors have a ‘most favored nation’ clause in their contracts that says whatever one is paid/allowed to do, the other must be given the opportunity to do the same.
