A game doesn't have to be fun. He likes making fun games though. Go look for your sad games elsewhere.

I like games of all different lengths. Sprawling games that go on and on, like Morrowind... short games, designed to be played over and over like Breath of Fire V... even seemingly unending games, designed to be played in short bursts, like Animal Crossing...

This is a shame, but I would imagine making a game just because fans begged him, and not because he had a passion to do so, would make for a worse game than he is known for.
