I could never commute to the office or mall in this. The bed’s too small, there’s not enough towing capacity and I need AWD and higher ground clearance.

I do know that the last car *not* to follow this convention was the 1985 full-size Chevrolet which held to the 1930s/50s standard that each “series” (trim level), in this case Caprice and Impala, was its’ own thing and they were collectively “The Chevrolet” as a line (all other Chevys were line extensions, for a while

It’d never fly in the “aspirational” US car market, but I’d like to see a cheap car that embraces its cheapness. Skip the door panels and lets see a painted door frame. Let’s get more creative with materials. Cork for flooring and sound insulation.

In the US of A we don’t subscribe to the theory of “Everything you need, and nothing you don’t”

This thing is fantastic looking! It has the vibe of a Twingo which was a truly lovely little car. With any luck, I will get to experience the joy and mediocrity of the Casper as a rental car someday.

It really depends on how you define better. I can’t talk to all old cars so I will talk about what I know. I drive an 80 series Land Cruiser, which many feel is the peak of old school and new school and one of the best products Toyota ever made.

If you measure cars like washing machines, by every measure the modern car is going to be better. They can be more content dense, look more sleek, and do the simple task better.

New cars are objectively better by basically ever metric. That doesn’t necessarily mean they are more fun, as fun often comes from dealing with imperfections, but overall they are definitely better.

I’m hardly old, but I have no desire for most of the tech you can get in new cars. I’m fine with most safety tech (better airbags, ABS, and stability control are good things) but frankly, I have no desire to own a car with android auto, carplay, any sort of switchgear that lacks haptic feedback, self driving

It really makes no sense...

This rig was in a war 72 years ago, has a tree growing thorough it and it’s still in better shape than the Jeep FC you found in Washington state.

I daily a MK 6.5 GLI with nothing but a Uni stage 1+ tune, and I love it. This is just the right amount of power without getting into trouble, and because it’s a Jetta, it sits well below the radar of the local 5-0.
Now I’ve come to accept a small bit of turbo lag with my ‘16, but I’d like to know how the turbo lag is

I have one.  The seats could be better and the interior is a tad cheap, but it’s fast, efficient and with better tires a very good backroad car.  Some folks bitch about the rev hang, but it doesn’t really bother me.  The EA888 Gen 3 engine is a gem.  Enjoy it for what it is.  The last of its kind.

Boston, 1976. I remember seeing this in the paper as a little kid and being aghast.

No. Do you know anything about American history?

I don’t know how old you are or how much you’ve interacted with various technologies, but if you were around in the early 2000's and used a Creative Nomad Jukebox or Archos Jukebox, you know what MP3 players were like before the iPod came out. They worked and were pretty cool and cutting edge, but they weren’t

Came here to say this.  Mines still pulling daily duty 47 years later and I still see others on the road.  Also, the best looking small pickup ever created.

a motor so perfect for a small truck they stuck it in a sports car!  ......

One year has been enough for all my cars to go wrong and none of them have been as exotic as a Ferrari
