These are all good books with the exception of The Great Gatsby - the subject matter just isn't pleasant. LOTR is too verbose. Moby Dick is overrated. Charles Dickens should get some love - Great Expectations is an excellent book, very American themes. All The Kings Men is essential for any American to read.

the best schools teach critical thinking and language early in school. teaching for a test is a waste of time. the only standardized test to practice for is the SAT and that should start around 6th-7th grade.
