A lot went wrong with D3 and that had nothing to do with the way D2 played in the past. Weapon stats were too randomized, a big no no for loot grinding.

The most we got were screenshots, teaser/alpha demos and promises of what the game mechanics would be like. Best of all was the "promise/idea" of giving nova flexibility in physical movement. It had alot of potential that was just put in the back burner. DX
