As long as you have a device (backup battery or iphone charger) that has a usb port you can charge the device. The cable is usb on one side and either a power port on the other or their funky plug. As log as you dont lose the cable you are golden. I bought the older model and have had no issue with their cables.

I use mine on every flight and have never had an issue. Even on planes that have no wifi as long as I wait until we are above 10k feet.
