I drove a V8 Vantage which had a similar flappy paddle system. To get out first you just hit the gas, it seems like he wasn't hitting the gas hard enough. Of course the owner was telling me to put the pedal to the floor everywhere I went so...probably why i didn't have this problem. Also Florida is a lot less crowded.
