The NC Miata replaced Mazda's tested, bulletproof BP motor with a Ford-influenced MZR motor. Not bashing on the MZR motor, but it doesn't have the reliability reputation of the BP. Maybe in due time...

Spot on analysis. For $12k, the car should be powered by a more fuel efficient LS-series motor and not a first generation SBC, and even then, then build would have to be cleanly done.
