I wonder if there's a sweet spot age for Smash to really hit home then, and the majority of users are big Nintendo fans as well.

Likely has to do with the way the palette worked in the coding. Some were separate from the ROMs, some were on the actual ROMs, some were in the actual GBC.

I would argue the opposite. See, I could get over the designs of Gen 5. I really could have taken a few I enjoyed, ignored that they were repeating patterns in some of the original games. But then the English names came out.
