Probably will have a decent tutorial section. Minecraft is probably more complex than this especially if playing the Java version. The question is whether he would enjoy a dungeon crawler style game, since this doesnt really have the mining and crafting that he may enjoy about Minecraft.

I figured they work in the shoes as him finding them in the movie, but he has them even in his homeworld scenes. Unless those scenes are actually from later in the movie, since we know Robotnik ends up there eventually.

If you’re on PC, you can always grab a one month Origin Premier for $20 and play the game. I don’t see myself playing this more than one playthrough, so that’s what I did.
