I was not a big fan of the show back in the day but I will say this. I think for all of Al's grumblings and all of Peggy's insults they basically loved each other and at the end of the day their shared dysfunction kept them together and they banded together against the "normal" people around them.

I think animal have a sense of guilt or shame but I don't think that its measurable by human standards. They have complex emotions but not the moral structure that is imposed on humans through a legal system or religion.
