In NYS, you only pay sales tax on the difference of the trade in. For example, you trade in your car for $5,000, (doesn’t matter if it was a cheap buy, it’s whatever the price the dealership gives you) for a new car worth $20,000. You pay sales tax on $15,000. Is that what you were asking?
