It's been confirmed in a ken lobb interview with IGN that if you buy characters piecemeal for the game their purchase is credited toward the full version if you want to upgrade. so if you buy two, for instance, if you want to buy the full version it will then be 10 bucks, not 20.

if you take a look at the roster, what we are getting is a very stylized and balanced group. there is a character for every type of player(keepaway, rushdown,grappler, etc.)

they are creating new ones, and the original 8 is just the launch roster, they plan to release more characters in waves.

I figure that killzone's 4.5g is likely unoptimized, I think they should be able to shave some of that off by launch.
