You could easily upgrade the cassette, rear derailleur and shifter to 10 or 11 speeds.

With a rheostat control, Van den Driessche could be rocking an infinite number of speeds.

Now days with Alfine (11) and Rohloff (14) rear IGH hubs, 11 speed cassettes and triple cranks, the number of unique ratios could be be well over 200...and that is with 3 shifters.
