I always thought that a major design parameter for the MBT-70 as well as the M1 was to keep the overall height down to reduce visibility. While I understand the need for the CROW turret, it just seems to be a step backward in regard to reducing the visual signature of the tank.

Agreed. Sure cars are much bigger and safer than 100 years ago. But in the case of an SUV, the efficiency to move one person 21 miles is the same as it was 100 years ago. Sure the engines are much more efficient but we have piled so much more weight on the chassis that it leaves us at the same miles per gallon point…
