I would have to agree with what everyone says here, I work from home (my entire team does ... all around the US) and it does get a little lonely at first but you do get used to it. You may also have many of these tools from your employer.

I would agree. Get a book called "Thinking in Java" while it's Java centered it teaches you how to thinking in an OO mindset. I started in C and now program in Ruby,C#,J#,PHP,XML, Shell etc.. it's the way to go.
