I have given it a shot. Besides the animation, I can barely stand Shinji moping about for an hour or two, much less an entire season of episodes. I understand I'm in the minority, but I rarely watch anime at all.

I was in the exact some position you are, and I just watched the movies. You'll certainly miss some of the finer points, but I'm not a fan of dated anime, so... take that as you will.

There are increasing differences between the movies and the original series, however, as I understand it.
