I like to think that Luke being such a bad Grand-Master to begin with was deliberate. Think about it. He, too, was an adult when first trained by Yoda, and was only trained for an extremely short period of time. He had very little experience of being a simple Jedi, never-mind being a Master (or Grand-Master).
